It is known that Badami was popularly defined as Chalukyas royal territory. However, this town has now become sluggish. It is further considered to be a part of Bagalkot district situated in Karnataka. In terms of the origination of this town, Vatapi was the proposed name for Badami. Rock cut temples, fortresses and similar structural carvings are commonly found in this town. Chalukyas or Badami Chalukyas ruled Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh during 6th and 8th centuries. In those days, Badami was their capital. The founder of state was one of the powerful Chalukya kings, Pulakeshi. In 540 A.D., he created it by outshining most of the Kings. The Brahmanical and Jain temples of 6th and 7th century are located in Badami. In order to design these rock cut temples, elaborate interior decoration is employed. In fact, it hints the art and architecture of that era precisely. There are four cave temples in Badami, they portray the secularism, the rulers of those times. It is noticeable that they religiously believed in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. 18 inscriptions are found in Badami, major emphasis is given to some of them only. The first language of this area is Kannada. Indian cotton outfits are put on by the local people of Badami.
