Chitradurga can be defined as an administrative district in the Indian state, Karnataka. The city’s name has its derivation in Chitrakaldurga, a lofty hill with a structure similar to umbrella. The history of this region dates back to the era of Indian epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata. This town is known by three names Chitradurg, Chitrakaldurga as well as Chittaldurg. The rock hills, valleys, and towering boulders of numerous shapes are visible in Chitradurga. As folklore says, this was considered to be an abode of demons namely, Hidimba and his sister Hidimbi. During the era of Indian epic Mahabharata, these demons existed over here. Chitradurga got a name of Chitaldoorg, when the British Empire was in accession. On a geographical note, it is observed that this Kannada region has lots of hills and forts. The picturesque valleys in Chitradurga are found here along with the boulders in varied shapes. With his brilliant performance in the stream of military, Timmana Nayaka won the rule of Chitradurga. This event marked the initiation of ruling period for Nayaka of Chitradurga. With its 19 gateways, palace, mosque and four secret entries are among the places which give evidence about interesting historical significance.
