About This Pilgrimage
Horanadu is a genuinely remote pilgrimage town on the banks of the Bhadra River, deep in the Western Ghats — home to the Sri Annapoorneshwari Temple, believed to be the second most significant Annapoorna temple in India after Kashi. Sage Agastya is said to have consecrated the deity here in the 8th century, the same century Adi Shankaracharya founded Sringeri nearby.
The Legend
According to tradition, Lord Shiva once declared that everything in the world, including food, was Maya — illusion. To prove him wrong, Goddess Parvati vanished entirely, and nature itself came to a halt: the seasons stopped changing, nothing grew, and the world faced genuine famine. Moved by the suffering this caused, she reappeared as Annapoorneshwari and fed everyone herself, demonstrating that food — and the sustenance of life — is genuinely real, not illusion.
A Direct Link to Sringeri
The temple's major 1973 Mahakumbhabhishekam ceremony was personally performed by the Jagadguru of Sringeri Sharada Peetham — a genuine institutional connection between the two temples, not just a shared travel route.
400 Years of One Family
Hereditary Dharmakartha stewardship has continued here for roughly 400 years — a shorter lineage than Dharmasthala's, but a genuinely similar pattern of sustained family custodianship.
Sevas, Timings & Booking
Three full meals a day, including dessert, served free to every visitor — regardless of caste, religion, or background. This is genuinely one of the most comprehensive Annadana traditions of any temple on this circuit, not just a token gesture.
Common sevas include Maharanga Pooja (Deepardhana), Panchamruth Abhishekam, and Kumkum Archana, generally arranged on arrival at the temple. Dress code is enforced: men are expected to remove their shirt and vest before entering the complex, covering their shoulders with a towel or shawl; women are asked to dress modestly, without a strict formal code.
Where to Stay
Worth knowing plainly: Horanadu is a genuinely small, remote town, and its accommodation options are mostly basic lodges and temple-run guesthouses rather than proper 3-star and above hotels. Many visitors combine a Horanadu visit with an overnight stay in nearby Sringeri or Chikmagalur instead, given the wider range of options there.
