Udupi a south west Kannada state which serves as headquarters for Udupi district. Krishna Temple is the chief attraction of this town. With its establishment in August 1997, the town got its separate identity. Along with this town, Karkal and Kundapur taluks were separated from Dakshina Kannada District. This action was carried out to establish Udipi district. Udipi Cuisine has got its name from this town. Udipi has its roots in the Tulu name odipu while others legends maintain that the town’s name is a combination of two Sanskrit words, udu (star) and Pa (Lord). According to the story, moon’s radiance was lessened by the course of King Daksha. His daughters were married to moon and after the curse, latter prayed to Lord Shiva to restore its shine. Moon and its wives created a linga in the Chandramouleeshwara Temple of Udipi and offered prayers to Lord Shiva. This prayer was accepted by Lord Shiva and ever since Udupi is considered as ‘Lord of stars’, Moon. Towards the west of Udipi district, lies Arabian Sea. This town is one of the ancient Educational Centers. Udipi Cusine is considered to be famous for the vegetarian food throughout the nation.
